Coming Soon

Outside the schoolhouse, we’re parked and waiting for my sister’s headshot to make its grand debut on the marquee.

The anticipation builds. She gets out of the car. We get our phones ready. This is her moment.

A few minutes pass.

And then, finally, there she is.

Well, sort of.

Her name appears on the marquee, accompanied by the very flattering headshot:

COMING SOON.

We scream.

All that anticipation. All that preparation. Not a sister in sight.

It felt like the kind of scene Voicemails for Isabelle would feature as a flashback—the whole family sitting outside a schoolhouse, absolutely losing it over a photo that never appeared.
